The Alzheimer’s Association presented a statistics according to which the number of people diagnosed with the disease keeps rising. They expect that by the year of 2050 about 14 million people will be diagnosed with this debilitating disease, known for its disastrous effect on people’s memory, imposing anxiety and confusion.
Today over 5 million people struggle with Alzheimer’s, and it is the 7th leading cause of death in the US. The statistics says that over $148 billion goes for the treatment of the disease each year.
However, there are no pharmaceutical solutions available to treat, reverse or halt the symptoms of the disease. Most of the medications on the market are made to reduce the amyloid plaques, made from Amyloid B (AB), a protein, that build up on the brain. These are considered to be the trademark of the disease.
But, the latest studies have shown that small AB clumps called oligomers appear a lot before the plaques start to develop. The scientists explain that the molecular structure of the oligomers is quite different from AB.
Furthermore, the scientists revealed that the drugs used to destroy amyloid plaques have actually no effect on the oligomers. This is the perfect explanation for the failure of Alzheimer’s drugs. These medications are designed to affect the plaques, not the oligomers, their precursor.
